Schefenacker Expands Michigan Plant

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources; Houston, Texas). Schefenacker Vision Systems USA Incorporated (Marysville, Michigan), a subsidiary of Schefenacker AG (Esslingen, Germany), plans to add a $3 million, 65,000 square foot paint facility, for painting the plastic mirror shells it makes, to the Marysville plant, as well as installing $7 million worth of new equipment and machinery.

Schefenacker is one of two major suppliers of automotive mirrors in Michigan, and the company sees a rosy future ahead for its U.S. business. This must be so, because this expansion follows another done in 2002, at which time the company added a 33,000 square foot expansion, along with $12 million worth of new equipment and machinery. The company felt that to remain competitive, it needed to have production, painting, and assembly done at the same site. Painting had been done by another supplier, then reshipped to Schefenacker for final assembly.

The Marysville Economic Development Authority will purchase an adjacent lot at the corner of Cuttle Road and Busha Highway, just south of the existing plant, and will be responsible for the construction of the new building, which it will rent to Schefenacker for a period of ten years at cost, after which time ownership will revert to Schefenacker for a nominal sum ($1), provided the company maintains a payroll of at least 500. The expansion is expected to add another fifty jobs to the 750 the company currently employs. Schefenacker was also awarded a $1 million state block grant, a 12-year 50% tax abatement to sweeten the deal and to ensure that the project didn't migrate to a Schefenacker plant south of the border, as well as another $100,000 for worker training. The company had also considered its Mexico plant, as well as its plant in Selmer, Tennessee, for the new paint facility addition.

Schefenacker designs and manufactures interior and exterior mirrors for the automotive market, serving many international OEMs worldwide.
