Scope Developing for Environmental Upgrades at Georgia Power Plant

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Two Georgia firms are developing project scope and conducting preliminary design to install emissions-control scrubbers and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems on all units of the 3,564-megawatt (MW) Scherer power station (Juliette, Georgia) by 2014. Oglethorpe Power Corporation (Tucker, Georgia) is the majority owner, and Georgia Power Company (Atlanta) is the operator.

The bituminous coal-fired plant was named after Robert W. Scherer, former President and CEO of Georgia Power. The plant consists of four Alstom/combustion engineering tangential-fired dry bottom boilers and four 891-MW General Electric turbine/generator sets. The first unit became operational in 1982, and the last in 1989.

All units are equipped with emissions-reducing low-NOx burners and overfired-air systems.

Construction on the scrubbers and SCRs are scheduled to start in fall 2010 with completion in 2012 for Units 3 and 4. Tie-ins for the SCRs and scrubbers will be conducted simultaneously. Units 1 and 2 will be completed after 3 and 4, with completion scheduled in 2014.

Advatech LLC (Chattanooga, Tennessee) is providing design services while most of the mechanical/electrical work will be self-performed.

The Scherer facility is jointly owned by Oglethorpe Power Corporation, Southern Company (Atlanta, Georgia), Florida Power & Light Company (Miami, Florida), Municipal Electric Authority of Georgia (Atlanta), Gulf Power Company (Pensacola, Florida), Jacksonville Electric Authority (Jacksonville, Florida) and Dalton Water & Light Commission (Dalton, Georgia).
