Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Shanghai Electric Power Company (Shanghai) laid the foundation for the 500-kilovolt (kV) Sanlin transmission and substation project, and held a ceremony at the end of December 2007. Leaders and representatives from the Shanghai Economic Commission, Pudong New District and Nanhui District attended the ceremony.
The $410 million project is located between Pudong New District and Nanhui District, occupying 48,800 square meters in Pudong, Nanhui, as well as Fengxian District. Construction includes about 261 kilometers of 500-kV transmission line, a 500-kV substation with eight outgoing lines and 2 million kilovolt-amperes (kVA) of newly added transformer capacity. The project is scheduled to go into operation in May 2009. Once the project is completed, it could transmit 1,800 megawatts (MW) from the Waigaoqiao power plant and ensure reliable power supply for the 500-kV Jing'an substation, the power supplier for the site of the Shanghai World Expo 2010, as well as the future power demand in the central and southern Pudong region after 2010.
Following the successful commissioning of the 220-kV Longhua substation at the end of December 2007, Shanghai's total investment in power grid construction reached $2.46 billion in 2007. In all, 83 grid projects, including 689.92 kilometers of transmission lines, six substations at the 220-kV level and 46 substations at the 35-kV or 110-kV levels with 95 main transformers comprising a capacity of 7.561 million kVA were built in Shanghai last year. Completion of these grid facilities have enhanced the 500-kV ring structure in Shanghai's grid and optimized the 220-kV grid structure in southeastern Shanghai.
