SONHOE Selects Consultant for Heavy-Oils Refinery in United Kingdom

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--SONHOE Development Company Limited (London) has selected Wood Mackenzie (Edinburgh, United Kingdom) to perform a feasibility study for the proposed 200,000-barrel-per-day heavy oil refinery in Teeside, United Kingdom. The study is expected to be completed by early 2009. After the study is complete, an engineering and construction company will be selected to perform engineering, procurement and construction services for the refinery complex, which is expected to go online by 2013.

The refinery will consist of a crude and vacuum unit, hydrocracking unit, solvent deasphalting unit, thermal conversion unit and a distillate hydrotreating unit. Construction on the refinery is expected to begin in late 2009. The plant is expected to produce diesel, jet, naphtha and kerosene refined products from heavy crude oil from the North Sea, Latin America, Middle East and Africa. The diesel will be marketed in the United Kingdom and northern European regions meeting Euro IV requirements. The naphtha will be shipped to the Teeside petrochemical complex and will be also marketed in Europe. In addition, the complex will have a 190-ton-per-hour syngas plant that gasifies liquid asphaltenes to produce hydrogen to support the refinery.

SONHOE specializes in the development of hydrocarbon processing and infrastructure facilities. The company's main purpose is to upgrade low-value feedstock into demand-driven, high-value products that support energy markets worldwide. The company will create 2,500 jobs during the refinery's four-year construction phase. In addition, 450 jobs will be created to operate the new facility.
