Startup Company Begins Aggressive Plans for Two Sodium Hydrosulfite Plants in North America

The plant has been idle for a number years and the restart will require a major investment of $8 to $10 million in capital for new storage tanks, heat exchangers, and other major process components.

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Vimax Industries (Bucks, Alabama), a newly formed privately-held company, is planning to produce over 200 million pounds per year of sodium hydrosulfite from two different plant sites in North America, one in the United States and one in Canada. This aggressive plan includes the completed acquisition of an existing liquid sodium hydrosulfite plant located in Bucks, Alabama, that was formerly owned and operated by Celanese Corporation.

The Bucks plant has been idle for a number years and the restart will require a major investment of $8 to $10 million in capital for new storage tanks, heat exchangers, and other major process components. Pending permit approvals, construction activity is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2005, with a potential restart and initial production beginning late in the second quarter 2005. The new plant will have a planned capacity of 100 million pounds per year.

Vimax has hired G A West & Company (Saraland, Alabama) as the general contractor to complete most of the planning and select subcontractors, where necessary. Considerations are underway for the installation of additional technology and equipment that would allow for the production of dry sodium hydrosulfite product at the Bucks plant.

Plans for a second plant in Canada are in the very early planning stages and would include the construction of a grassroot plant near Montreal, Quebec, that would also produce an estimated 100 million pounds per year of product. Vimax plans to market the product for its traditional uses in the textile industry and paper mills but also to the retail world in stain removal products sold in national retail chains. A specific site in Quebec has not been finalized, and construction of this plant is not expected to begin until early in 2006.
