Sun & Press Bulletin Plans $48 Million Printing Plant in New York

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). New York State's Press & Sun Bulletin has begun planning for a $48 million printing plant (PEC 14002739) in Johnson City, New York. The Press & Sun Bulletin is owned by Gannett Company Incorporated (NYSE: GCI) (McLean, Virginia). The new plant will house distribution, and paper storage facilities, as well as the printing operations. News, advertising, and circulation staffs will remain at their current locations. The new plant will print the "Star-Gazette of Elmira", the "Ithaca Journal", as well as the "Press and Sun Bulletin of Binghamton".

The new plant will be built on a 27-acre brownfield site that was an Endicott Johnson Ranger-Paracord plant near CFJ Boulevard and Market Street. The former shoe plant closed in 1993 and may contain polluted soil, which will be remediated by the site developer, Newman Development Group (Vestal, New York). The 6-story 96,000 square foot press will occupy twelve of the 27 acres and will employ approximately 115 people.

In October of 2003, The Press & Sun Bulletin signed an agreement with Koenig & Bauer AG (Wurzburg Germany & York, Pennsylvania) to provide a full color press. The press will contain eight printing units capable of printing 80 pages at up to 75,000 copies per hour. Current production capacity is at about 45,000 copies per hour.

The Press & Sun Bulletin has selected McFarland Johnson Incorporated (Binghamton, New York) to handle planning and engineering responsibilities of the project. A construction manager is expected to be selected in June of 2004. Construction is slated to commence in the fall of 2004 and the press is scheduled to come online in late 2006.

The Press and Sun Bulletin was created in 1985 by the merger of the Evening Press and the morning Sun-Bulletin and currently employs 400 people. The Press & Sun Bulletin is part of Gannett Company Incorporated, which has operations in 45 states, the District of Columbia and Guam. Operations include publishing newspapers, news programming, operating broadcasting stations and cable television systems. Gannett is the country's largest newspaper group in terms of circulation. They include USA TODAY, the nation's largest selling daily newspaper.
