Suncor Breaks Ground on $97 Million Fuel Ethanol Plant in Ontario

Plans call for the creation of a nameplate 52.8 million gallon per year fuel ethanol plant - Includes Chart

Released Friday, July 01, 2005

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Suncor Energy Products Incorporated (North York, Ontario), has begun construction on a new $97 million fuel ethanol plant near Sarnia, in the Township of Sainte Clair, Ontario.

Plans call for the creation of a nameplate 200 million liter (52.8 million gallon) per year fuel ethanol plant that will convert twenty million bushels of corn annually into the renewable fuel. Construction is expected to take about a year to complete. The facility is expected to create about 35 full time jobs.

Since 1996, Suncor has been blending ethanol into its retail-branded gasoline sold in Ontario. As a clean burning, renewable resource, ethanol is expected to help reduce carbon monoxide emissions up to 30% in the province.

Suncor Energy Products Incorporated is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Suncor Energy Incorporated (NYSE:SU) (Calgary, Alberta, Canada). In addition to a refinery in Sarnia, Suncor Energy Products has a network of 281 Sunoco-branded retail and Fleet Fuel card lock sites and has a 50% joint venture interest in over 200 Pioneer and UPI retail sites. Suncor Energy Products Incorporated manufactures, distributes, and markets transportation fuels, heating oils, and petrochemicals, primarily in Ontario.

According to the Ethanol Database, Canada at present has eight operational ethanol plants capable of producing over 64 million gallons of the fuel annually and with the Suncor project, two plants are now currently under construction. There are seventeen additional projects under development in Canada that could grow the countries capacity for producing ethanol to over 530 million gallons annually by the end of 2006.
