Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Sandvik Mining and Construction (Sandviken, Sweden), a business division of Sandvik AB (OTC:SDVKY) (Sandviken), has signed an agreement with RWE Power International (Cologne, Germany), a division of RWE AG (OTC:RWEOY) (Essen, Germany) to supply a turnkey materials-handling system for the Eemshaven power plant in the Netherlands.
The order, worth about $94 million, will comprise two grab-type ship unloaders, two stackers and three portal reclaimers for the hard-coal-fired plant. In addition to this equipment, Sandvik will supply 38 conveyors for a high-performance conveyor system. The conveyors will be suitable to handle biomass in addition to coal, as the power plant will also be able to operate on a certain amount biomass.
Sandvik supplies a wide range of equipment for mining, power stations and general material-handling situations. The company's conveyor systems have transporting capacities of between 100 and 20,000 tons per hour and include from overland conveyors, in-plant conveyors, underground conveyors and mine conveyors.
The stackers to be supplied will be used to stockpile the coal supplies for the power plant, while the grab-type ship unloaders use rail-borne, gantry-mounted grabbers. The nominal capacity of the Sandvik grabbers can be as high as 2,800 tons per hour. To complete the system, the Sandvik reclaimers are designed to quickly and efficiently reclaim the stockpiled coal.
The system to be installed by Sandvik at Eemshaven will add significantly to the overall plant efficiency by optimizing the unloading and delivery times of coal feedstock to the plant.
In May, Sandvik Materials Technology (Sandviken), a separate division of Sandvik AB, announced it was increasing production capacity of high-alloy steam generator tubes to meet the increasing demand from the nuclear power sector. Within two months, this same division announced the award of a multi-year contract from Areva SA (EPA:CEI) (Paris, France) worth $256 million to supply steam generator tubes for use in nuclear power plants.
The contract was in line with Areva's long-term plans to secure critical supplies to ensure that it can meet the strong global demand for nuclear power plants. Under the terms of the contract, Sandvik will make the first deliveries of the steam generator tubes at the end of 2013.
The Eemshaven power plant will be located on a 49-hectare site near the Port of Eemshaven and is scheduled to be completed by 2011-12. Total generating capacity is expected to be in the order of 1,600 megawatts, which is sufficient to provide electricity for 3.2 million homes each year. The plant will operate at a thermal efficiency of 46%.
