With the hyper-accelerated pace underway to develop a viable COVID-19 vaccine and treatments in a fraction of the time normally required, it is inevitable that problems would crop up. This is all part of the drug development process. The risk factor rises with the number of people participating in the trials.
AstraZeneca was the first to call off its candidate's trial in September after at least one test subject developed unexplained neurological symptoms. The company has since resumed its testing everywhere but in the U.S.
On October 12, Johnson & Johnson put the brakes on trials of its vaccine candidate after a participant became ill. The company has yet to disclose the nature of the problem.
The next day, Eli Lilly put the brakes on enrollment for its monoclonal antibody treatment, similar to the one recently taken by President Donald Trump. Again, the issue was undisclosed.
Industrial Info is tracking 214 pharma-bio projects, worth $4.2 billion, that are tied to COVID-19 treatments. Click here for a list and see map below.
