According to plans, 11 thermal power plants will be built in the Binhai New District during the 12th Five-Year Plan. Seven of them will be gas-fired cogeneration projects with total installed capacity of 5.3 gigawatts (GW), located in Beitang, Nanjiang, Lingang Development Zone and Dagang districts. Five projects will each have an installed capacity of 900 megawatt (MW) with a heating supply area of 12 million square meters or more: Beitang Thermal Power Plant Phase II; Huaneng Tianjin Harbor Economic Area Gas-fired Cogeneraton; Nanjiang Thermal Power Plant or Western New Town Distributed Energy Station; Dagang Power Plant or Dagang Second Plant; and Nangang Industrial Zone Thermal Power Plant.
In addition to the above gas-fired projects, four new coal-fired thermal power plants will be built an existing coal-fired thermal power plant will be renovated in the Binhai New Zone, including Beitang Thermal Power Plant Phase I, Beijiang Power Plant Phase II, Dagang Power Plant Renovation, Airport Development Zone Thermal Power Plant Expansion and Tianjin Port Bond Zone Thermal Power Plant Continual Project. These projects will have a total increasing installed capacity of 2.68 GW, a total heating capacity of 44 million square meters and a heat supply load at 855 tons per hour.
According to plans, in future years, the grid structure will be further improved in the Binhai New Zone by further enhancing the 500-kilovolt (kV) and 220-kV main grids to achieve dual ring grid.
