Researched by Industrial Info Resources Australia (Perth, Australia)--Midal Cables International Pty Limited's (Tomago, New South Wales) aluminum conductor and rod plant is nearing completion and is expected to be operational by April 2014. The plant is expected to inject approximately $134 million (AUD$150 million) into the New South Wales region, with the creation of about 300 jobs, according to Managing Director Tony Temelkovsk.
The aluminum conductor and rod plant is located approximately 8 miles (13 kilometers) west of Newcastle, New South Wales, and is next to Tomago Aluminium Pty Limited's smelter in Tomago.
Midal Cables has entered a long-term agreement with Tomago Aluminium, which will supply 50,000 tons per year of molten aluminum to the plant for the production of rods, wires and conductors, with the final products to be used by power, manufacturing and associated industries. It is expected that the majority of the products will be exported to China, and only a limited amount will be used domestically. The project also will require a short-haul road to connect the conductor and rod plant to the Tomago smelter, and several small workshop and storage buildings. The total investment value of the project is about $58 million (AUD$65 million).
Caverstock Group Pty Limited (Sydney, New South Wales) is serving as the engineering and construction contractor, and is working with Kingston Building Australia Pty Limited (Cardiff, New South Wales) to deliver the completed project to Midal Cables as soon as possible. Considering that the project received state government approval in 2012 and construction did not kick off until late 2013, it is taking a relatively short amount of time to bring the project into production.
Temelkovski said that in the future, Midal Cables' preferred option would be to use the Port of Newcastle for shipments. However, that option would require further infrastructure upgrades, which are expected to be proposed to the state and federal governments in the near future.
