As the second-largest market region in the U.S. for industrial projects under construction, the Mid-Atlantic market region has 164 projects totaling $33 billion currently under construction.

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--As the second-largest market region in the U.S. for industrial projects under construction, the Mid-Atlantic market region has 164 projects totaling $33 billion currently under construction. The Mid-Atlantic region, which includes the District of Columbia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia, is second only to the Great Lakes region for industrial project construction. These include projects that have started civil/site preparation through all phases of construction to commissioning and startup.

That means that the Mid-Atlantic region accounts for about 14.6% of the U.S. total.
Five industries account for 97% of the industrial construction activity in the Mid-Atlantic region. This includes the Power Industry with $12 billion, Chemical Processing Industry with $6.7 billion, Industrial Manufacturing Industry with $6.5 billion, Pharma-Biotech Industry with $4.9 billion and Metals & Minerals Industry with $2 billion. The Pharma-Biotech Industry has the most projects under construction with 52.
North Carolina has the largest value of projects under construction, with 64 projects totaling $10 billion. ABB Incorporated (Cary, North Carolina), the North American arm of ABB Limited (NYSE:ABB) (Zurich, Switzerland), began construction in February on a $90 million high-voltage cable manufacturing plant in Huntersville, North Carolina. The high-voltage cable will be used for electric transmission line construction.
In one of the larger projects currently under construction in the U.S., Duke Energy (NYSE:DUK) is well into construction of the new 800-megawatt coal-fired Unit 6 at the Cliffside Power Station in Cliffside, North Carolina. The Charlotte, North Carolina, office of The Shaw Group Incorporated (NYSE:SHAW) (Baton Rouge, Louisiana) is the engineering and construction firm working on the project. Commissioning and startup of the new unit is expected in July 2012.
