The company was created in 1977, after taking over operations of the Venezuelan Petrochemical Institute (IPV), which was founded in 1955. Since then, Pequiven has been through several phases of expansion and consolidation, where it has widened its operational field, developing important internal and external markets for its products. The new Punto Fijo petrochemical facility will have five processing units. An ethylene cracker with a production capacity of 940,000 metric tons per year; a 1.08 million-metric-ton-per-year propylene unit; a benzene unit with a capacity of 770,000 metric tons per year; a 700,000-metric-ton-per-year paraxylene unit; and a butadiene unit with a processing capacity of 120,000 metric tons per year. This project will demand an investment of $5 billion, and its construction is to kick off in early 2014, with an estimated completion date three years later, in 2017.
The second petrochemical complex will be constructed in Navay city and will produce phosphatic fertilizers consisting of four production units; a trituration phosphate rock unit with a production capacity of 1.52 million metric tons per year; a 50,000-metric-ton-per-year tricalcium phosphates unit; a 70,000-metric-ton-per-year supersphosphate unit; and a beneficiation phosphate rock with a processing capacity of 825,000 metric tons per year. Its construction is planned to kick off in the second quarter of 2012, and it is estimated to be operational by the end of 2015.
Pequiven is to construct a third petrochemical facility in Puerto Nutrias. This $4 billion complex will consist of six units, with a production capacity of more than 2 million metric tons per year of nitrogen and phosphate fertilizers. It will use technology from Samicarbon B.V. (Sittard, Netherlands) in the urea and ammonia units, and the technology for the remaining units has not been selected.
