$150 Million in Life Sciences Construction Projects Underway at the University of Toronto

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). The Saint George campus of the University of Toronto (Toronto, Ontario) is alive with the sounds of construction crews building two new major life science buildings. The first project to get underway with a formal groundbreaking in September of 2002 was the Centre for Cellular and Biomolecular Research (CCBR) Phase I (PEC 53001677). The CCBR represents an eventual total investment of more than $100 million. The groundbreaking ceremony for the $70 million Leslie Dan Pharmacy Building followed shortly in late spring of 2003. (PEC 53001770)

The CCBR project was first reported by Industrialinfo.com in 2002 and will house research laboratories for a diverse group of fields including biomedical sciences, pharmaceutical sciences, computer science, chemistry, physics and chemical engineering. The Architects Alliance (Toronto, Ontario) worked in conjunction with Behnisch, Behnisch & Partner (Stuttgart, Germany) to design the 221,000 square foot building's open research concept. Stantec (Toronto, Ontario) is the construction manager for CCBR Phase I, which is scheduled for completion in 2005. Phase II of the project, valued at approximately $24 million, will complete the build-out and purchase of lab equipment for those floors not finished in Phase I.

The 167,000 square foot Leslie Dan Pharmacy building will allow the university to double enrollment in its school of pharmacy. 16 stories tall, the building will include practice laboratories, research facilities, a resource center, lecture theatres and administrative offices. As reported by Indstrialinfo.com in January of 2003, the building was designed by Moffat Kinoshita Architects (Toronto, Ontario) in partnership with the London-based Foster and Partners.
