Written by Amir Richani for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--AES Andes (Santiago, Chile), a subsidiary of AES Corporation (NYSE:AES) (Arlington, Virginia), has submitted three environmental permit requests to develop projects producing 1,700 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy with 2,400 MW of battery storage.
AES Andes has submitted three environmental permit applications in recent weeks for projects accounting for 4,100 MW in solar power generation and battery storage. According to the Chilean company, the three projects represent investments worth US$3 billion.
The latest application was submitted in September for the Solar Oriente project, which is worth US$990 million in investments and includes 581 MW in solar power and 809 MW of battery storage. The project will be located in Pozo Almonte, in the northern Tarapaca region of Chile.
Meanwhile, the other two developments waiting for environmental permits were presented in July. The Altos del Sol project in Antofagasta, Chile, accounts for investments worth US$1.375 billion. The development includes a 736.6-MW solar park with a battery energy storage system (BESS) of more than 1,000 MW. Meanwhile, the Llanos del Sol project will be the smallest development, with investments worth US$635 million for a 381.8-MW solar park with a five-hour battery storage capacity of 531.5 MW. The project will be located in Pozo Almonte, Tarapaca. Subscribers can click here to learn more about the project.
"We are proud to announce the entry of new renewable projects into the Environmental Assessment Service with an estimated investment of US$3 billion in such a short period of time. Without a doubt, being able to develop these three major initiatives has been a major challenge for our team of professionals," said Javier Dib, chief executive officer of AES Andes.
The electricity company owns and operates 3,544 MW in Chile, with wind and solar projects accounting for 431 MW and 456 MW, respectively. AES Andes currently has 767 MW of renewable energy capacity under construction and 1,400 MW in projects contracted in development in Chile.
Across Latin America, the company operates 5,316 MW with several renewable projects under development.
