Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--OCI Solar Power's Alamo I project in Texas began delivering power to CPS Energy's grid as of December 18, 2013. Alamo I generates energy for about 6,600 homes that are served by CPS Energy. The facility will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 60,000 tons, which is equivalent to removing about 10,000 cars off the road in the San Antonio area.
More than 167,000 solar panels encompass the 450-acre solar farm. Alamo I cost roughly $110 million.
OCI is only getting started. The 41-megawatt (MW) project is only the first phase of a 400-MW development, which is anticipated to make Texas one of the top solar-producing states when finished.
Construction of OCI's Alamo II solar project began on October 31, 2013, and it will bring an additional 4.4 MW to San Antonio upon completion in early 2014.
The Alamo III solar farm will produce 5 MW at a location that has yet to be determined. Alamo IV, which will be near Brackettville, will produce about 40 MW. Alamo V, VI and VII will have the largest capacities--possibly 100 MW each, if not more. Site locations are still being determined for the larger facilities.
The remaining six projects of the 400-MW development are expected to be completed by 2017 and will power 10% of San Antonio homes. With all the projects combined, OCI's costs add up to nearly $1.2 billion.
