Austin Energy Releases Requests for Proposals for 100-Megawatt Sand Hill Unit Addition

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, TX)--Austin Energy has confirmed that it has released requests for proposals for general contracting services to install two 50-megawatt (MW) GE LM6000PD SPRINT turbines at the company's Sand Hill Energy Center in Del Valle, Texas.

The utility has been discussing the construction of the units at this station since early 2001. Austin Energy hopes to begin construction of the turbines and a 0.75 MW black start generator in the second quarter of this year with construction being completed in early 2009. Stanley Consultants (Austin, Texas) was selected as the engineer.

The center was constructed in 2001 and consisted of four 50-MW GE LM6000PD SPRINT turbines. A 290-MW combined-cycle addition was later commissioned, consisting of a 139-MW GE MS7001FA with a Doosan heat recovery steam generator and a 151-MW D11 steam turbine to increase the plant's capacity to 486 MW.

Austin Energy, a department of the city of Austin, owns 2,600 MW of generation. It operates two facilities inside the Austin metropolitan area and partly owns the 600-MW coal-fired Fayette power station in LaGrange, Texas. It also owns a 16% interest (about 400 MW) of the 2,708-MW South Texas Nuclear Project in Wadsworth, Texas. The utility also has a substantial ownership in renewable energy, as well.
