Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Bechtel Corporation (San Francisco, California) made big strides in natural gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects in fourth-quarter 2018, as it started and finished work on major units for Cheniere Energy Incorporated (NYSE:LNG) (Houston, Texas) and continued to develop natural gas-fired, combined-cycle (NGCC) power plants. Industrial Info is tracking nearly $142 billion in projects worldwide involving Bechtel, nearly half of which are in the Oil & Gas Industry.

Bechtel is playing a significant role on the development of export facilities for LNG. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) recently projected domestic LNG export capacity will reach 8.9 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) by the end of 2019, making the U.S. the world's third-largest exporter of LNG behind Australia and Qatar. The U.S. was expected to end 2018 with 4.9 Bcf/d of LNG export capacity after two new liquefaction units (at Cameron LNG in Louisiana and Freeport LNG in Texas) become operational, according to the EIA.

Bechtel and Cheniere announced in November the first LNG had been produced at Cheniere's Corpus Christi Liquefaction project in Portland, Texas. The massive project's $5.5 billion first train is expected to reach full completion toward the end of first-quarter 2019, with a capacity of 4.5 million tons per year of LNG and a natural gas inlet capacity of 1 Bcf/d. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Bechtel also is at work on the $5.5 billion second train and $3 billion third train at the Corpus Christi Liquefaction project, each of which are expected to have LNG production and natural gas inlet capacities identical to Train 1. Cheniere has reached tolling agreements with Woodside Petroleum, EDF, Endesa, Iberdrola, Gas Natural Fenosa and Pertamina of Indonesia for the first two trains, and has signed a partial memorandum of understanding with China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) for offtake from the third train. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on Train 2 and Train 3.

Further out, Bechtel has been selected to provide front-end engineering and design (FEED) for Cheniere's proposed $3 billion fourth train and $3 billion fifth train at Corpus Christi, which, if approved, would not begin construction until mid-2020 at the earliest. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on Train 4 and Train 5.

Cheniere also recently announced it had awarded Bechtel the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for the proposed, $2.5 billion sixth train at its Sabine Pass Liquefaction facility in Cameron, Louisiana, following initial production from the $2.5 billion fifth train early in November. The fifth train is in final commissioning and is expected to wrap up next summer; the sixth train, if approved, would begin construction around the same time and wrap up in mid-2023, according to current schedules. Each is designed to produce 4.5 million metric tons per year of LNG from about 650 million cubic feet per day of natural gas. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on Train 6 and Train 5.

"We are releasing Bechtel to do some early works to get Train 6 underway, prior to our final investment decision," said Jack Fusco, the chief executive officer of Cheniere, in a recent earnings-related conference call. "The process of releasing Bechtel under our limited notice to proceed our Corpus Christi Train 3 worked well, and we expect that to be the case for Train 6 at Sabine Pass also." He later added: "Commissioning of Sabine Pass Train 5 is going very well. We introduced feed gas in September, first LNG was produced in late October, and we expect substantial completion to be achieved during the first quarter of 2019."

Although Industrial Info's project database shows Bechtel involved in only a handful of Power Industry projects, the EPC provider still is playing a key role in the development of two major natural gas combined-cycle (NGCC) plants: Advanced Power AG's (Zug, Switzerland) $1.4 billion Cricket Valley Energy Center in Dover Plains, New York, and South Field Energy LLC's $1.1 billion South Field Energy Center in Wellsville, Ohio. Each would generate 1,100 megawatts (MW) from combustion and steam turbines provided by General Electric (NYSE:GE). For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the Cricket Valley and South Field plants.
