Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). After three years of planning, studying, and raising funds, farmer cooperative owned, ethanol venture, Big River Resources Cooperative's (West Burlington, Iowa) fuel ethanol plant in West Burlington, Iowa is on-line.
The first loads of corn began arriving at the site last Wednesday and batches of fuel ethanol will begin flowing out of the plant this week.
The plant has a designed output capacity of 40 million gallons per year and will chew up over fifteen million bushels of corn annually and also produce by products in the form of 135,000 tons of dried distillers grains for livestock feed and some 240 million pounds of CO2.
The official ground breaking of the plant occurred in November of 2002, under the direction of plant builder, Fagen Incorporated (Granite Falls, Minnesota). It took seventeen months to construct the $55 million plant.
The plant is located about 135 miles East of Des Moines, Iowa in Des Moines County and has major transportation excess via old Route 34, a Burlington Northern rail line, and it's only a seven miles to river access on the Mississippi river.
Big River Resources is Iowa's fifteenth ethanol plant to come on-line, and when it becomes fully operational, the state of Iowa will have the capability of producing over 720 million gallons of the renewable fuel annually.
Currently, two other plants are under construction in Iowa; Renewable Fuels Incorporated in Emmetsburg (Plant 1061042) and Golden Grain Energy in Mason City (Plant 1058339) and an additional two are in the planning and fund raising phase.
