Biomass Power Plant in Oregon Slated for Construction This Fall

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Seneca Sustainable Energy, a business unit of privately held Seneca Sawmill Company (Eugene, Oregon) is moving forward with plans to build an 18-megawatt (MW) combined heat and power plant in Eugene, Oregon. Seneca's plans will call for a $45 million investment to build a plant that will utilize biomass (wood wastes, bark, shavings and sawdust) to generate heat for the company's dry kilns and up to 18.8 MW of electricity that will be sold to the grid. Seneca anticipates completing the permitting phase and receiving a construction permit by August. Groundbreaking is tentatively scheduled for September 2009 and is slated to come online in the third quarter of 2010 with commercial operation to start by the end of that year.

The project will include multiple buildings, a 200,000-pound-per-hour boiler and a 20-MW turbine generator. Seneca also plans to install an electrostatic precipitator, which puts a charge on particles, making them stick to a plate in order to take as much soot out of the air as possible before being released. The technology can remove 99.9% of particulates.

L D Jellison Incorporated (Vancouver, Washington) is providing engineering services for the project and Wellons Incorporated (Sherwood, Oregon) has turnkey responsibility for the boiler and turbine generator island. Industry veteran Bill Carlson of Carlson Small Power Consultants (Redding, California) has been advising Seneca.
