MPU currently owns six generating units with a total capacity of 102.5 MW. The addition of Unit 09 will increase the utility's in-house capacity by 61.76% to 165.8 MW. Unit 09 is going to be environmentally friendly as it is a Kvaerner atmospheric fluidized bed boiler (ACFB), which is one of the best solid fossil fuel boilers for low sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions. Unit 09 will also have a selective non-catalytic reduction (SNCR) system installed to reduce nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions. The ACFB will provide steam to a Mitsubishi Heavy Industry (MHI), a division of Mitsubishi Corporation (MC) (PNK: MSH.PK) (Tokyo, Japan) steam turbine/generator, plus up to 25,000 pounds per hour to local hosts for process and heating.

Construction completion of Unit 09 is planned by the fourth quarter of 2005.
