Calpine Completes Construction of 600 Megawatt Energy Center in Colorado

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Rocky Mountain Energy Center LLC, a subsidiary of Calpine Corporation (NYSE: CPN) (San Jose, California), has commenced full commercial operation of the $360 Million Rocky Mountain Energy Center located in Hudson, Weld County, Colorado.

Construction for the 600 megawatt (MW) project began in August 2002 and was completed in April of 2004. Calpine began full commercial operation of the project in June 2004. The newly built energy center will operate in a 2-on-1 combined cycle configuration consisting of two 180 MW Siemens Westinghouse Power Corporation W501F combustion turbine generators, two Nooter/Eriksen heat recovery steam generators, and a single 185 MW Siemens Westinghouse Power Corporation condensing steam turbine generator.

The Rocky Mountain Energy Center will join the year old 300 MW Blue Spruce Energy Center (Aurora, Colorado) as the second energy investment built by Calpine to supply power for the growing Colorado wholesale power market. For details on the Blue Spruce project see April 23, 2003 archived industry news article titled Calpine's Colorado 300 MW Peaking Power Plant is Ready for Summer.

Calpine will sell the entire electrical output of the project to the Public Service Company of Colorado a subsidiary of Xcel Energy (NYSE: XEL) (Minneapolis, Minnesota) under the terms of a ten-year tolling agreement.

Utility Engineering Corporation headquartered in Denver, Colorado performed the engineering duties for the project and The Industrial Company (TIC) based in Steamboat, Colorado were the general contractors.
