Canadian Hydroelectric Companies Continue Trend of Helping to Power U.S.

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Canadian utilities such as Hydro Quebec (Montreal, Quebec), BC Hydro Power & Authority (Vancouver, British Columbia), Manitoba Hydro (Winnipeg, Manitoba), the Ontario Power Generation (Toronto, Ontario), Hydro One (Toronto) and Nalcor Energy (St. John's, Newfoundland) have sold hydroelectric power to the utilities in the United States for decades. Some of these utilities such as Nalcor, Hydro Quebec and Manitoba Hydro are continuing to develop large hydroelectric and transmission projects that will produce power that may be sold to the U.S.

Canada is the second-largest producer of hydroelectric power in the world behind China. Roughly 60% of Canada's power is produced from hydroelectric facilities. The country produces more than 73,000 megawatts (MW) of hydropower, with the potential for more than 163,000 MW of additional conventional hydroelectric plants, according to the Canadian Hydro Association.

The U.S. currently produces only about 8% of its power from hydroelectric plants.

A new trend is beginning in which Canadian companies are investing in building and operating hydroelectric plants in the United States. Boralex Incorporated (TSX:BLX) (Kingsey Falls, Quebec) already operates some hydroelectric facilities in the U.S.

Symbiotics LLC (Logan, Utah), a U.S. hydroelectric company that is developing scores of hydroelectric run-of-river projects and several pumped storage plants, has been acquired by Canada's Riverbank Power Corporation (Toronto). Coastal Hydropower Corporation (Ladysmith, British Columbia) is looking at developing hydroelectric power plants at existing Army Corps of Engineers lock & dams in the Midwestern states utilizing VLH™ (Very Low Head) turbines (350 to 500 kilowatts each) to utilize low-head hydro resources.
