Canlac Solvay Pharma Nears Completion of $8.1 Million Plant Expansion in Quebec

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Canlac (Victoriaville, Quebec) (Plant 1029325), a division of Solvay Pharmaceutical Incorporated (Toronto, Ontario), the Canadian pharmaceutical sector of Solvay S.A. (Brussels, Belgium) will soon complete an $8.1 million expansion. Canlac's plant produces a liquid lactose-based medication called lactulose, one of Solvay's leading pharmaceutical products that is mainly used for the treatment of constipation and hepatic coma and is sold under its brand name DUPHALAC.

Canlac will increase its existing lactose capacity of four million kilograms to six million kilograms, with 70 percent of the product currently being exported. The starting material for lactulose is whey permeate, a by-product of cheese manufacturing. The whey permeate will be supplied by the Parmalat Canada Limited (Belleville, Ontario) dairy plant (Plant 1021582), located on the same site as the Canlac facility.

Funded in part by a $500,000 financial grant provided by the province of Quebec, the expansion will add six new jobs to the 19 presently employed at the plant. Solvay purchased the Canlac plant in 1996.
