Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Carmeuse North America, a subsidiary of Carmeuse SA (Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium), recently commissioned two new lime kilns at the company's Winchester limestone quarry and lime manufacturing plant in Clear Brook, Virginia. The $45 million project involved the construction of two 400 metric ton-per-day QualiCal Synthesis vertical lime kilns and supporting equipment.
Industrial Info first reported on the project in 2012 during the planning stage. Construction started in the summer of 2014 and was completed earlier this year.
The two new parallel-flow regenerative vertical lime kilns replace older, less efficient FLSmidth horizontal kiln technology. According to permitting documents, the new kilns will produce lime at 30-45% more fuel efficiency than the original kiln and can burn coal, petroleum coke or natural gas.
The Winchester quarry has been in operation since 1959. The original FLSmidth kiln was constructed in 1996 and was shuttered in 2008.
