CGNPC Awards CPR1000 Nuclear Island Main Equipment Supply Contract to Dongfang Electric

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--China Nuclear Power Engineering Company Limited (CNPEC) (Shenzhen, Guangdong), a subsidiary of China Guangdong Nuclear Power Corporation (CGNPC), awarded the Nuclear Island Main Equipment Supply Contract for CGNPC's Large CPR1000 Project to Dongfang Electric Corporation (Chengdu, Sichuan) in Nansha District, Guangzhou City on June 15, 2009.

The signing ceremony of the contract was held at Dongfang (Guangzhou) Heavy Machinery Company Limited (DFHM) (Guangzhou, Guangdong), the export and manufacturing location of large-scale nuclear power equipment established by Dongfang Electric in May 2004. QIAN Zhimin, Chairman of CGNPC, WANG Ji, Chairman of Dongfang Electric attended the signing ceremony; ZHENG Dongshan, Deputy General Manager of CGNPC and WEN Shugang, President of Dongfang Electric Corporation Limited (Chengdu, Sichuan) (SHA: 600875), attended and addressed on the signing ceremony on behalf of both parties respectively.

This is the largest order ever received by Dongfang Electric for the supply of main equipment to nuclear power islands.

Although not mentioned in the CGNPC and Dongfang Electric announcements the CPR1000 project refers to CGNPC's $8 billion Yangjiang Nuclear Power Project. As the largest nuclear power project to receive approval in China, Yangjiang Nuclear Power Project will be furnished with six 1,000-megawatt nuclear power units based on CPR1000, an improved Chinese pressurized water reactor technology. Construction of the project officially started in December 2008. Foundation excavation of the #1 power island passed the acceptance in March 2009. Foundation excavation for the #3, #4 power islands started in May 2009. According to the schedule, the first unit of the project will begin operation in 2013, and all units will begin operation in 2017.

Dongfang Electric is currently the largest nuclear island equipment supplier in China, and accounts for about 70% of the market share. In 2008, the company received totally $2.4 billion of new nuclear power orders.
