Chesapeake Renewables' Maryland Ethanol Plant to Offer Plethora of Byproducts

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Privately held ethanol start-up Chesapeake Renewable Energy LLC's (Baltimore, Maryland) Maryland ethanol project is more than your garden variety ethanol plant venture. The plant will offer a plethora of byproducts from electricity to fresh vegetables.

The company is waiting for the final state permit before moving into field construction. The plant will be on a 252-acre site in Somerset County near Westover, Maryland. The 55 million-gallon-per-year plant will utilize the team of Praj Industries (Pune, India) and CJ Schneider Engineering (Omaha, Nebraska) for the licensed ethanol process technology, Whiting-Turner Contracting Company (Baltimore, Maryland) as the construction manager and B A Engineering Incorporated (Gaithersburg, Maryland) to engineer and construct the power house.

The project is broken down into four major components. The first piece is the 55 million-gallon-per-year fuel ethanol plant. The second piece is a nameplate 19.8-megawatt (MW) power island fired by 250,000 tons of wood chips. The third piece in partnership with Continental Carbonic Products Incorporated (Decatur, Illinois) will convert liquefied CO2 into dry ice, and the last piece will be 30 acres of greenhouse structures to grow vegetables.

The cost to build the plant is in the $230 million range, and the project is expected to break ground in the summer of 2008 and be online by early 2010. The ethanol plant is only expected to use 6 MW of power, and the remaining electricity will be sold to the grid.

The project may also include a barge terminal for grain and wood chip delivery and also ship out finished product. The plant is expected to generate 65% of its revenue from ethanol sales, and the remaining 35% will come from the sale of byproducts and will be the first plant of its kind on the eastern seaboard.
