China Guodian Diversifies, Total Installed Capacity to Surpass 95 Gigawatts in 2010

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--China Guodian Corporation (Beijing), one of the top 5 power producers in China, is planning to diversify into business sectors upstream and downstream of its core power generation business, in order to remain competitive with regulated electricity prices and deregulated coal prices in China. The company will develop a comprehensive energy group integrated with power, coal, railway, port and transportation within 2 years, according to the first Report on Social Responsibility 2008 issued by China Guodian Corporation in Beijing on June 23, 2009.

According to Report, the controllable installed capacity of China Guodian will surpass 95 gigawatts (GW) in 2010, and coal output will surpass 80 million metric tons, accounting for over one-third of its consumption in power generation. By 2012, China Guodian Corporation's non-power industry will contribute half of its profit.

Prior to the announcement of the strategic transfer by China Guodian Corporation, other top power producers in China such as China Huaneng Group, China Huadian Corporation, China Power Investment Corporation also disclosed strategic plans to develop comprehensive energy strategies and diversification.

It's also specified in the Report on Social Responsibility that top priority will be given to clean and renewable energy in its development plan. By 2012, the installed capacity of clean and renewable energy dominated by hydropower and wind power will account for over 20% of its total installed capacity.

In 2008, China Guodian terminated 2.94 GW of inefficient small thermal power units; signed 22.7 million metric tons of carbon emission reduction trade agreement, and its total number of projects under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) reached 100, which could allow the company to achieve a total emission reduction of 51.3 million metric tons.

As of the end of 2008, total installed capacity of China Guodian reached 70.24 GW, and the annual power output reached 298.7 billion kilowatt-hours. Of which, installed capacity of wind power reached 2.88 GW, ranking the top both in China and Asia, and the output of wind power reached 4 billion kilowatt-hours, accounting for about one-third of the total in China.
