China's Chongqing Plans to Add More Than 1,000 Megawatts of Capacity in 2008

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Chongqing, the largest but youngest city under the control of the State Council of China, plans to add more than 1,000 megawatts (MW) to its grid in 2008, according to a report for the development and reform of Chongqing published in late December by the city's Development and Reform Commission.

According to the report, Chongqing has a total wind energy reserve of about 30,000 MW. The first 500-MW wind power project in Chongqing will start construction this year. In addition, the city plans to build nearly 20 wind projects in seven districts within five years.

The report states that Chongqing is conducting pre-stage preparation for two nuclear power projects. The first project is in Baitai Town of Fuling District with an expected installation capacity of 2,000 MW. The second project will be located around Shizhu District with an expected installation capacity of 2,000 MW. Large enterprises, such as China Power Investment Corporation (Beijing) and China National Nuclear Corporation (Beijing) have shown their intent regarding the operation of nuclear power projects in Chongqing. The city will support these enterprises to conduct pre-stage preparation, and make efforts to get the projects included in the nation's midterm and long-term plans.

The estimated maximum load in Chongqing Grid will be 7,500 MW, up 13% year over year, and the estimated consumption of electricity will be 49.45 billion kilowatt-hours, up 10.5% year over year, the report stated. Coal output is expected to reach 45 million metric tons, and the supply of natural gas is expected to reach 4.5 billion cubic meters.
