Coal and Coke Based Generation Looks at Possible Growth of over 3,400MW in Western Canada

Developers in Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan are looking at eight projects for a total of over 3,400-megawatts (MW) of new coal/petroleum coke fuel projects. Six of the projects that are being developed will utilize clean coal technology; the other two currently are being developed to utilize conventional technology. Development of coal and coke fired power projects is one of the reasons that Western Canada is experiencing dynamic growth in industrial project activity. The Canadian Clean Coal Coalition is made up of seven Canadian and one United States firms: ATCO Power (Calgary, Alberta), Basin Electric Power Cooperative (BEPC) (Bismarck, North Dakota), EPCOR (Edmonton, Alberta), Sherritt International (Toronto, Ontario), Nova Scotia Power (Halifax, Nova Scotia), SaskPower (Regina, Saskatchewan), TransAlta Corporation (Calgary, Alberta) and the California-based Electric Power Reach Institute (EPRI) and is proposing a 400MW Project in the Hinton, Alberta area. EPCOR and TransAlta are looking to construct a coal 500MW integrated gasification combined-cycle (IGCC) unit at the existing Genesee Power Station (Warburg, Alberta) or at a grassroot site.

SaskPower is looking at adding a 300MW supercritical unit at the Shand Power Station near Estevan, Saskatchewan. AES/Wapiti Energy a subsidiary of AES Corporation (Richmond, Virginia) is planning to use coal and biomass to fuel a circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boiler for 184MW near Tumbler Ridge, Alberta). TransAlta is also looking at a 450MW supercritical unit addition at the Keephills Power Station (Duffield, Alberta). The last clean coal project is the two 500MW Bow City Power 1,000MW supercritical plant being developed by Carbon Development Partnership (Edmonton, Alberta) an affiliate of Sherritt International near Brooks, Alberta.

One conventional coal-fired project is the 150MW Elkford Generating Station near Elkford, British Columbia, being developed by Elk Valley Coal Corporation a 62/38 joint venture of Fording Canadian Coal Trust (Calgary, Alberta) and Teck Cominco Limited (Vancouver, British Columbia).
