Cogentrix Completes Construction of $50 Million Expansion Project at Plains End Power Station

Construction began in March 2007, and full commercial operation of the expansion project commenced this month. The project consisted of installing 14 8.4-MW Wartsila 20V34SG natural-gas-fired engines to the plant. The new engines will operate in a simple-cycle peaking configuration capable of generating 117 MW when energy demands are at their highest, which is during the summer and winter months.

Plains End currently operates 20 Wartsila 18V34SGs that generate a total of 111 MW. The expansion project brings Plains End's nameplate capacity up to 228 MW.

Utility Engineering Corporation (Denver, Colorado) provided engineering services for the project. The Industrial Company (Steamboat Springs, Colorado) acted as the general contractor.
