ConocoPhillips Awards Engineering Firm for $1 Billion Refinery Expansion

ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) (Houston, Texas) has awarded Fluor Corporation (NYSE:FLR) (Irving, Texas) an engineering and procurement contract for a refinery expansion at the company’s Wood River Refinery in Roxana, Illinois. The project is currently being designed at Fluor’s Sugar Land, Texas office. Construction of the expansion is expected to begin late 2007, with completion in 2009.

The expansion is necessary to enable ConocoPhillips to process sour Canadian crude. Sour crude has a higher sulfur content than sweet crude and is less expensive. The project will include constructing a 55,000-barrel per day coker unit that contains four coke drums utilizing ConocoPhillips technology. In addition, the project includes metallurgy upgrades to the existing 155,000-barrel per day crude unit, construction of a 50,000-barrel per day vacuum unit, construction of an additional sulfur recovery unit to expand 400-ton per day sulfur complex, and the expansion of an existing 10 million-gallon per day wastewater treatment unit.
