Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Hu Honua Bioenergy LLC (Honolulu, Hawaii) plans to convert a 24-megawatt (MW) power station, located in the community of Pepeekeo, Hawaii, to biomass by utilizing locally mature eucalyptus that is harvested on the island to support Hawaii's renewable energy target.
The conversion is to add a stoker boiler and use existing steam turbine and modifications to associated components, such as burners and boilers. The demolition of the old facility and the conversion to biomass is expected to create hundreds of local jobs.
ESI Incorporated of Tennessee (Kennesaw, Georgia) was hired to oversee the construction process, along with Hawaiian Dredging Construction Company (Honolulu) and American Electric Company LLC (Oahu, Hawaii) as contractors.
Construction started in late 2012, but as of January of this year the two contractors had packed up and left the site, since Hu Honua Bioenergy has not been able to pay them for months.
Although litigation issues are ongoing, Hu Honua has chosen another contractor, Performance Mechanical Incorporated (Pittsburg, California), to finish the construction process. Project completion is scheduled for 2015.
