Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Following a lengthy delay, Hu Honua Bioenergy LLC (Honolulu, Hawaii) plans to move forward with its half-completed coal-to-biomass power plant conversion project located in the community of Pepeekeo, Hawaii. The company has reached a settlement with Hawaii Electric Light Company (HELCO) on an amended power purchase agreement. Construction now depends on final approval from the state's public utilities commission.
The 21.5-megawatt (MW), coal-fired power plant will be converted to a 24-MW facility that burns 260,000 tons per year of eucalyptus trees and agricultural crop waste.
Construction began in late 2012, but contractors of ESI Incorporated of Tennessee (Kennesaw, Georgia) and American Electric Company LLC (Oahu, Hawaii) had walked off the job as of January 2014 due to lack of payment for several months.
Hu Honua Bioenergy has picked another contractor, Performance Mechanical Incorporated (Pittsburg, California), to finish the $130 million project.
Construction is expected to resume later this year, with the facility going online by the end of 2018.
The project will add a stoker boiler and use the existing steam boiler. Modifications will be made to associated components, such as boilers and burners.
