Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Privately held St. Joseph Energy Center LLC (New Carlisle, Indiana), an affiliate of Development Partners Group LLC (White Plains, New York), with partners Toyota Group (Japan) and Ares Private Equity Group (Los Angeles, California), has begun Phase I construction on a new 695-megawatt, natural gas-fired power plant near New Carlisle, Indiana.
The estimated $700 million project has been under development since 2011. After many setbacks, such as restructuring and permitting delays with the regional power transmission organization PJM Interconnection LLC (Norristown, Pennsylvania), the silver shovel ceremony finally took place last week, with plant developers and local officials on hand to mark the occasion.
Site work is already well under way with concrete being poured, cranes onsite and materials being delivered daily. The plant is being built by Kiewit Power Constructors Company (Lenexa, Kansas) under an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract.
Phase I involves construction of the first two-on-one combined cycle power block that will consist of two 232-megawatt Siemens SGT6-5000F combustion turbine generators equipped with heat recovery steam generators and a 231-megawatt steam turbine.
Phase II, a replica of the phase one power block, is not expected to get under way until 2019. When the entire plant goes online sometime mid-2021, it will have a generation capacity of 1,345 megawatts.
The plant is being built on a 165-acre site at the corner of Edison and Walnut roads near the I/N Tek Incorporated cold rolled steel facility.
