Converted Organics is Building First Organic Fertilizer Plant in New Jersey

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Converted Organics Incorporated (Boston, Massachusetts), formally Mining Organics LLC, has begun work on its first organic fertilizer plant in Woodbridge, New Jersey. The estimated 60,000 square foot plant will initially use approximately 78,000 tons of organic food waste as a raw material to produce approximately 6,700 tons of liquid concentrate and 7,500 tons of dry fertilizer. The estimated $15 million plant is currently under construction and is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2008.

Converted Organics has employed several engineering and construction firms for this project. Weston Solutions Incorporated (Manchester, New Hampshire) is the engineer of record and The Construction Partnership Incorporated (TCPI) (Exton, Pennsylvania) is handling construction management. Armistead Mechanical (Waldwick, New Jersey) was awarded the mechanical contract and expects to begin work in September, once building erection is complete.

Converted Organics plans to build additional facilities in Rhode Island, Massachusetts and New York. Industrial Info first reported on the proposed Bronx, New York plant in April of 2004, but Rhode Island is the anticipated next plant to be built. They have started negotiations for the lease and service agreements for the estimated $15 million plant, which will be located in Johnston, Rhode Island. The construction is expected to begin in the latter half of 2008 and will use the same technology and be of similar design as the plant in New Jersey. Weston Solutions, who has supported Converted Organics for many years, will be the engineering firm.

The technology for the New Jersey plant and the second projected site in Rhode Island is being licensed from International Bio Recovery Corporation (IBR) of North Vancouver, British Columbia. In July, Converted Organics, who currently holds an IBR plant license for New Jersey, made a payment to IBR for the deposit on the license agreement for the second fertilizer plant.

IBR’s Enhanced Autogenous Thermophilic Aerobic Digestion (EATAD) technology converts organic food waste into natural fertilizer using heat and bacteria. The process is done in three steps: (1) the raw material is prepared by removing inorganic material and turned into a slurry; (2) the slurry is heated in digesters and bacteria are introduced; and (3) once the digestion and stabilization are complete, the slurry is dewatered to produce liquid filtrate and solid cake and refined into a finished product. The process takes between two and five days and produces a fertilizer that offers soil nutrition and disease control. Converted Organics expects to sell the fertilizer in both liquid and dry form to agribusiness, turf management and the retail markets.
