Denmark's Vestas to Expand its Presence in Taiwan

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Vestas Wind Systems A/S (Randers, Denmark) has opened a subsidiary company in Taiwan, which is considered to be one of the top three most favorable places in the world for wind power generation mainly because the island “relies on imports for its energy needs, because it has environmental concerns and shallow seashore on its west coast,” Vestas Asia Pacific A/S President Thorbjorn Rasmussen said.

Taiwan's government hopes to install 2,000 megawatts (MW) of wind-power projects by 2010. For more information, view related January 23, 2008, article - Wind Renewable Energy Will Continue to Grow in 2008.

Vestas has had a presence in Taiwan for several years and has done business in the past through its distributor, Vestech Taiwan Corporation. In addition, it has received contracts to build 70 wind turbines in Taiwan with total capacity of 126.1 MW. Of the 70 turbines, 64 are for Taiwan Power Company with a capacity of 12 MW each.

In fall 2006, Taiwan Power Corporation Limited inaugurated a 46-MW wind power plant equipped with 23 V80-2.0 MW Vestas turbines in Changkong.

The company will play a major role in the construction of a wind power facility in Miaoliao, Yunlin County. Under the contract, Vestas will transfer wind power equipment and technologies to the project through Japan's Toyota Tsusho.

Vestas has received an order for four projects in Inner Mongolia totaling 232 units of the V52-850 Kw turbine. The order has been received from China Guangdong Nuclear Wind Power Company Limited. The turbines will be delivered in mid-2008 and are expected to be operational by the end of 2009.

Founded in 1945, Vestas focuses on the development, manufacture, sale, marketing and maintenance of wind power systems that use wind energy to generate electricity.
