Developers Looking at 64% Increase in Power Generation for Maine

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Maine currently has about 3,420 megawatts (MW) of operational power generation. Developers are looking at adding 2,190 MW, representing a 64% increase in new power generation. One of the reasons for this proposed growth is to become less dependent on Canadian imports.

Developers in Maine are looking at about 2,060 MW, or about 95%, of the new capacity being powered by renewable sources. These renewable projects include biomass, coal gasification, tidal and wind power projects. The largest project is the 700-MW Twin River Energy Center (Wiscasset, Maine) locally owned by Twin River Energy LLC. The proposed center would be a coal/biomass integrated gasification combined-cycle cogeneration facility. On the wind side, the largest project is the 500-MW Linekin Bay windfarm, which is to be built in 100-MW, 150-MW and 250-MW phases, in Aroostook County and owned by a joint venture between Linekin Bay Energy LLC (Freeport, Maine) and Horizon Wind Energy LLC (Houston, Texas). On the tidal side, Maine borders the Bay of Fundy, which has some of the highest tides in the world. There are about 300 MW worth of projects proposed for Maine's coast, the largest being the Maine Tidal Energy Company's 200-MW Penobscot tidal energy hydroelectric project west of Vernon Island near Bucksport, Maine. Maine Tidal is a subsidiary of Ocean Energy Company in Washington, D.C.

Conventional generation to be added in Maine only accounts for about 5% of the new planned generation with the largest project being a combined-cycle 120-MW plant at the Quoddy Bay LLC (Augusta, Maine) Pleasant Point LNG Terminal near Eastport, Maine.
