Distribution Center Expansion Costing $55 Million Planned for Kansas

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). American Eagle Outfitters, Incorporated (NASDAQ:AEOS)(Warrendale, Pennsylvania) has begun the design phase for a proposed $55 million distribution center adjacent to its existing distribution center in Ottawa, Kansas. Groundbreaking occurred in April 2006, and building construction should begin in June. The new distribution center will involve the construction of a 540,000 square-foot building at 1301 Davis Avenue. Completion is slated for April 2007 and is expected to generate approximately 300 new jobs. H & M Company, headquartered in Jackson, Tennessee, was awarded the design-build contract for construction of the new facility.

In 2000, the idea of expanding was first discussed. Initially, the company was considering expanding its existing Ottawa distribution center by 110,000 square feet; however, plans were shelved in favor of a grassroot 402,000 square-foot distribution center estimated at $42 million to be constructed at the East Hills Business Park in Lawrence, Kansas. This was later dropped due to public opposition. It was then determined feasible to build adjacent to the existing facility in Ottawa, due to its easy access to Interstate 35 and steady traffic flow from Mexico to Canada.

American Eagle Outfitters, Incorporated, headquartered in Warrendale, Pennsylvania, was founded in 1972. The company operates as a retailer designing, marketing and selling its own line of clothing that includes jeans, graphic T-shirts, accessories, footwear, outwear and swimwear under the name American Eagle Outfitters, American Eagle and AE brand names. In April 2006, the company stores were estimated at 870, including 799 stores in the U.S., the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico and 71 stores in Canada.
