Dominion, GreatPoint Energy Building Coal-Gasification Plant in Massachusetts

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)-- Dominion Resources Incorporated (NYSE:D) (Richmond, Virginia) has teamed up with GreatPoint Energy to build a pilot-scale coal-gasification plant at the Brayton Point power station in Somerset, Massachusetts. The plant will convert coal, petroleum coke and biomass into clean natural gas while enabling the capture and sequestration of CO2. GreatPoint Energy will invest $25 million in a research and development center, creating more than 100 jobs at the demonstration plant.

Construction started on the project in September 2007 and will be completed in September 2008. The facilities will be used to demonstrate the company's technology for a cost-effective way of converting coal to gas, a product GreatPoint Energy calls bluegas™, the company's ultra-clean, pipeline quality natural gas product. The next step upon successful demonstration is to build full-scale facilities across North America. The gas will be transported to consumers by pipeline at a cost that is less than drilled or imported natural gas. The carbon byproduct will be sequestered in geological formations near the gas production plants. Brayton Point was chosen because it is the largest fossil-fueled power plant in New England, capable of producing 1,568 megawatts of electricity and burning coal, natural gas and fuel oil in its eight generating units.
