Eight Nuclear Reactors Planned for Station in Eastern China

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--With plans to build eight reactors, the Tianwan nuclear power station in eastern China's Jiangsu Province is on track to become a world-leading nuclear power base. After the reactors are built, Tianwan's capacity will total more than 8,000 megawatts (MW).

The Tianwan station, located in Liangyuangang City, currently has two 1,060-MW AES-91 reactors from Russia in operation. The cooperation between China and Russia for the equipment has been one of the largest economic and technical efforts between the two countries. Construction on the project officially began in 1999 and is now operated by Jiangsu Nuclear Power Company Limited (Liangyuangang).

In November 2007, China signed the Tianwan Phase II agreement with Russian for two additional reactors. The contract will be finalized in 2008, according to Jiang Guoyuan, general manager of Jiangsu Nuclear Power Company. Four other units are still in preliminary planning stages, and the technology has not yet been decided.

China currently has 11 nuclear power units in the provinces of Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Guangdong. The units are adopted with first- or second-generation nuclear power technology. China is actively developing the third generation of nuclear power technology, which is safer and last longer.

In July 2007, China National Nuclear Power Technology Corporation (Beijing) signed an agreement with Westinghouse for four AP1000 nuclear power units -- two for Zhejiang and two for Shandong. In November 2007, China Guangdong Nuclear Power Group Corporation (Shenzhen) signed an $11.8 billion agreement with Areva, a French nuclear power company, for two European pressurized reactors, as well as for related nuclear fuel supplies and service in Taishan Nuclear Power Station in Guangdong Province.
