Electric Energy Invests Millions to Upgrade Illinois Power Plant

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Illinois-based, Electric Energy Incorporated (Joppa, Illinois) is not going to let its 1,104-megawatt (MW) Joppa Power Station (Joppa) be on one of those "dirtiest-power-plant" lists. It is investing millions of dollar over the next five years to upgrade the facility.

The six-unit coal-fired power station, located in Massac County, has been operating since 1953. It includes six 184-MW General Electric turbine/generator sets and six Alstom Combustion Engineering tangential-fired dry bottom boilers.

Electric Energy will be upgrading all six units by replacing and refurbishing all major boiler and turbine components, such as the reheaters, superheaters, economizers, HP/IP rotors and bearings, along with miscellaneous other equipment.

Work will start on Unit 1 this spring and end with Unit 6 in 2013 with a three-month duration for each outage.

APCom Power (Saint Louis, Missouri), a subsidiary of Alstom Power, has been contracted to perform electrical and mechanical tasks on all units.

Electric Energy, owner of the Joppa plant, is jointly owned by Ameren Corporation (NYSE:AEE) (80%) and Kentucky Utilities (Lexington, Kentucky) (20%).
