Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--EmberClear Corporation (Calgary, Alberta) and engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) provider Kiewit Corporation (Omaha, Nebraska) recently broke ground on a natural-gas-fueled power generating station in Birdsboro, Pennsylvania. The project was approved last year by the U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and recently received the green light to begin construction.
The 488-megawatt (MW) facility will be a 1-on-1 combined-cycle power plant, and will utilize a high-efficient General Electric (NYSE:GE) combustion turbine, and an Alstom heat-recovery steam generator (HRSG). Kiewit will hire several specialty subcontractors during the construction phase.
The project is being built on a brownfield site, formerly home to a U.S. Army tank factory, and it is expected to take a little more than two years to complete. The new facility will have easy access to nearby natural gas pipelines, and it will be in close proximity to a suitable electrical interconnection point.
The power generated from the facility will be enough to power more than 300,000 Pennsylvania homes and businesses, while reducing emissions. The project has a total investment value of $550 million and is expected to be completed in summer of 2019.
