Envirepel Energy to Demonstrate Zero-Emissions Cogen at New California Plant

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Envirepel Energy Incorporated (Vista, California) is constructing the Kittyhawk 2.5-megawatt (MW) Zero-Emissions Biomass Cogeneration Plant in Vista, California. Once completed, the plant will demonstrate a closed-loop system that will produce power, steam and fertilizer.

Ground biomass from local landfills will be heated in an indirect-fired, ceramic-lined "Dutch oven" as fuel. The oven converts the biomass to gas, which is burned in a combustion chamber, providing heat to a heat recovery steam generator (HRSG). This provides steam to drive a steam turbine/generator (STG). When the steam leaves the STG, it goes into a condenser that feeds an air-cooled water cooler. The water then goes to an economizer, which returns the water to the HRSG and through a wet flue gas scrubber system (FGD) and a wet electrostatic precipitator (ESP). After the water goes through the FGD and ESP, it will go into a water cleanup system and then into a demineralizer system before going back into HRSG. The exhaust from the HRSG will enter a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) unit to reduce NOx emissions and then to a cyclone dust collector to eliminate particulate matter. The particulate matter will then go through the FGD and ESP and then through a continuous emissions monitoring system before leaving the stack. The ash collected will be used to make fertilizers.

Construction started in August 2007, and operations are expected in March 2008. Larger commercial plants using this process are planned to follow, which are expected to take two to three times longer to build.
