Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--ExxonMobil announced in early November that it began construction on its second petrochemical factory in Singapore. The project is designed to work in accordance with the company's 605,000-barrel-per-day refining capacity in Singapore and is expected to be complete in 2011. The $939 million project's commencement ceremony was held on Jurong Island. ExxonMobil's second petrochemical factory is near the company's first factory.
The new project is designed to produce 1 million tons of ethylene a year, 450,000 tons of polypropylene and 300,000 tons of synthetic rubber for special use.
Singaporean Prime Minister Li Xianlong said at the commencement ceremony that ExxonMobil's decision to build its second petrochemical factory reflects the company's confidence in Singapore. Li also said the project will again raise Singapore's status as the center of the area's petrochemical industry.
ExxonMobil's first petrochemical factory in Singapore began production in 2001 and had the capacity of 800,000 tons of annual production. In 2006, the $2 billion plant's production capacity expanded to 900,000 tons. It is the company's single largest investment project worldwide. With the new petrochemical project on the way and 2,300 employees already on its payroll, ExxonMobil is on its way to becoming Singapore's largest international investor in the manufacturing industry.
The total output of the petrochemical park on Jurong Island now amounts to $51 billion.
