Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--FibroWatt LLC (Newtown, Pennsylvania), a 70:30 joint venture of Homeland Renewable Energy LLC (Bedford, New Hampshire) and Energy Power Resources Limited (Woodbridge, England), is moving ahead with three projects for a total of 150 megawatts (MW) in North Carolina. Fibrowatt considered a total of eight sites and narrowed it down to projects in Montgomery, Sampson and Surry counties.

Fibrowatt has been in talks with government entities, electric utilities and the poultry industry in North Carolina to install three power plants that utilize/dispose of poultry litter being produced by the local poultry industries. North Carolina has shown the most interest, with groups in eight counties contemplating building a power plant in the area. The three projects include two 55-MW power plants in Montgomery County near Biscoe and Sampson County near Faison and a 40-MW plant in Surry County near Elkin. Construction of the plants is expected to commence in 2010 with completion and commissioning in 2012. Fibrowatt is in negotiations with an engineering, procurement and construction contractor and expects to complete negotiations in April.

According to Terry Walmsley, FibroWatt Environmental Affairs Manager, FibroWatt has proven the business development plan with the completion of its Benson Minnesota Plant. This basic plant concept will allow FibroWatt to develop, permit, finance and construct more than one project at any given time. Three things that must be at the forefront of all projects before construction starts are having power sales agreements in place, adequate supplies of biomass (poultry waste and wood) and appropriate permitting.
