Florida Power & Light Begins Construction On $600 Million Power Project in West Palm Beach

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Florida Power & Light Company (Juno Beach, Florida), a subsidiary of FPL Group Incorporated (NYSE:FPL) (North Palm Beach, Florida), has started construction on the $600 million, 1,250-megawatt (MW) West County Energy Center in West Palm Beach, Florida.

The project started construction this month and is scheduled for commercial start-up in March 2009. The plant will consist of a 3-on-1 combined cycle power island that will be equipped with three dual-fueled 250-MW Mitsubishi Power Systems 501G combustion turbine generators with evaporative cooling, three duct-fired heat recovery steam generators (HRSG) and a 517-MW Toshiba International Corporation steam turbine generator.

The West County facility will also feature state-of-the-art emissions technology, such as a selective catalytic reduction (SCR), which will be installed on the HRSGs. Each combustion turbine will have dry-low NOx combustion technology (DLN) with water injection being utilized during the usage of fuel oil to also help control NOx (nitrogen oxide) emissions. Four emergency generators will also be installed at the facility for black-start capability.

BVZ Power Partners, a joint venture between Black & Veatch Corporation (Kansas City, Missouri) and Zachry Construction Corporation (San Antonio, Texas) provided turnkey engineering, procurement and construction services for the project.
