FPL Prepares to Set First HRSG for Marcus Hook Cogen

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). A power plant under construction in Pennsylvania by FPL Energy, LLC, a subsidiary of FPL Group, Incorporated (NYSE: FPL)(North Palm Beach, Florida), is nearing completion of underground work. The 750 megawatt (MW) plant is being constructed on the site of a petrochemical refinery owned by Sunoco, Incorporated (NYSE: SUN) (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) in the city of Marcus Hook. The new merchant facility will serve the growing demand for electricity in the Pennsylvania-New Jersey-Maryland region and supply steam to the refinery.

Stone and Webster, Incorporated, a unit of The Shaw Group Incorporated (NYSE: SGR) (Baton Rouge, Louisiana), is providing engineering, procurement, and construction services for the project. The construction phase started last fall and is slated to be completed by March 2004. Next month, erection will commence on one of the key components that will make up the combined-cycle plant. Construction is at the 25% mark and engineering is nearly 85% complete.

It is constructing power plants that will add more than 1,000 megawatts in 2000 and has announced plans to build plants that would add nearly 2,000 megawatts to its operations by 2003.

Sunoco, Inc. is a leading manufacturer and marketer of petroleum and petrochemical products. With 730,000 barrels per day of refining capacity, approximately 4,150 retail outlets selling gasoline and convenience items, interests in over 10,000 miles of crude oil and refined product pipelines, and 35 product terminals, Sunoco is one of the largest independent refiner-marketers in the United States. Sunoco is a growing force in petrochemicals with over nine billion pounds of annual production capacity, largely chemical intermediates used in the manufacture of fibers, plastics, film and resins.
