Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--General Electric (GE) has signed a contract with Wuhan Iron & Steel Company (WISCO) (Hubei Province) to supply two 9E blast-furnace-gas-fired, combined-cycle generation units. GE and WISCO had established a strategic cooperation agreement in September 2007 in terms of trade, environment protection, power distribution, financial services, investment and leadership training, among other things. The turbines will be delivered in late 2008, and the two units are scheduled to begin operation one year later.
The project is the largest of its kind for GE in China. With the total installed capacity reaching 160 megawatts, the units are designed to produce 2.4 billion kilowatt-hours year of electricity per year and 160 tons of steam per hour, providing the basic production elements to WISCO. By using the units, 2 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions will be reduced from the steel-production process.
The project conducted will fulfill three goals: emissions reduction, power generation and steam production by recycling blast furnace gas more efficiently and with less pollution, said Jack Wen, GE Energy's Regional Executive in China.
As the world's largest developing economy, China has been blamed for being a major contributor to global warming and environmental deterioration. China is the second-largest greenhouse-gas emitting country after the United States. Its carbon dioxide emissions per capita are 3.65 tons, or 87% of the world average.
China has pledged to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions and improve energy savings. The Chinese government announced that the country's energy consumption and main pollution emissions per gross domestic product would be respectively reduced by 20% and 10% from 2006 to 2010, compared with the previous five years. Up to September 4, 2007, 788 projects for China's Clean Development Mechanism plan have been approved by the National Development and Reform Committee.
WISCO was founded in 1955 and covers 21.17 square kilometers. As China's third-largest iron and steel producer, WISCO manufactures 20 million tons per year of various products, including silicon steel, wire and rolled plates.
