Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Southwest Georgia Ethanol LLC (Pelham, Georgia), a subsidiary of First United Ethanol LLC (FUEL) (Pelham), announced that it has filed a voluntary petition for relief under Chapter 11.
FUEL has not filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The company will continue to manage and operate the plant under court protection as debtor-in-possession, and ethanol production will continue throughout the process. FUEL cited operational issues, the rising costs of corn feedstock, the decreasing ethanol prices, and the economy as reasons for filing. FUEL will use the Chapter 11 filing to reorganize and protect its business assets in the long term.
The $125 million project began producing ethanol in late 2008. The ethanol production campus is on a 268-acre site on Lewis B. Collins Road in Pelham, which is in Mitchell County, approximately 36 miles south of Albany.
Georgia currently has two operational fuel ethanol plants. A third is in the planning stages in Jessup, Georgia.
